Seattle does not chip paint all at once
It does it a thousand times, in a pattern specific enough that we can usually guess someone's commute from where the damage sits.
The freeway does the worst of it. I-5 through the city and Aurora north of the Ship Canal are old, heavily patched surfaces, and patched asphalt sheds. Every seam and every pothole repair puts loose material back into the lane, and at highway speed a piece of grit smaller than a peppercorn arrives with enough energy to go through clear coat and into color. You will not hear it happen. You find it two winters later as a spray of white specks across the middle of the bumper and along the leading edge of the hood, which is the shape of the impact zone at 60 miles an hour.
The floating bridges add a version of their own. The I-90 and SR-520 decks stay wet most of the year, and a wet deck turns the vehicle ahead of you into a sprayer, throwing grit back at hood height for the length of the crossing. Cross the lake twice a day and the front of the car takes that dose twice a day, all winter. Construction lanes do it on demand, and when the hills freeze the traction sand that keeps them drivable goes airborne behind every car ahead of you.
Park the car and the damage changes character completely. Street parking in Ballard and Fremont means nine months under a maple: sap in the warm stretch, bird mess year round, both capable of etching a clear coat if they bake on. Capitol Hill parallel parking hands out door dings and a scuffed door edge from your own door meeting the car behind it. Grocery lots produce the cart contact that lands on rear quarters and door skins, which is the one place almost nobody thinks to protect until it has already happened.

Self-healing is the feature people most want explained and the one most often oversold. The accurate version: the top coat on STEK DYNOshield is elastic, so fine marks displace it rather than cut through it. Add heat and the layer relaxes back to the shape it was molded in, and the mark closes. Sun on the panel is enough, and so is warm water during a wash, which is why plenty of owners see it happen without setting out to. We are not going to give you an activation temperature, because STEK does not publish one and we would rather leave a gap than fill it with a number we made up.

What heat actually closes
- Wash swirls and the fine haze a gritty towel leaves
- Light scuffs around door handles and the fuel door
- Surface marks from a jacket zipper or a fingernail
- Fine marring from a winter of washing a dirty panel
What it does not
- A cut that goes all the way through the top coat
- An impact hard enough to crease or tear the film
- Damage already in the paint before the film went down
- Anything on a panel that is not filmed. Paint does not heal
That last line is the one worth sitting with. Self-healing is a property of the film, not of your car. The film heals itself; it does nothing for the paint sealed beneath it, and that paint is now fixed in whatever state we found it, under a layer carrying a 10-year warranty. This is why nobody starts cutting until we have walked the panels with you. A defect we spot at that point is a decision you get to make. The same defect spotted afterward is a decision that has already been made for you.
A car with no garage gets more out of film than a garaged one
That sounds obvious and it is still the thing most quotes ignore. Protection earns its money in exposure hours, and a Seattle street car banks them relentlessly. It sits through overnight rain roughly nine months of the year, parks within a door's width of strangers every night, and collects everything a maple drops in July and everything a crow leaves in February. A car that goes freeway to garage and back sees the same rocks on I-5, but it spends the other twenty-two hours of the day out of the weather. Same film, different return.
The hydrophobic layer built into DYNOshield is the part of that math people underrate in a wet climate. Water beads and sheets off instead of sitting, so the winter road film has less to bond to and rinses rather than clinging. That matters for a second-order reason more than a first: the less aggressively you have to scrub a panel, the fewer swirl marks you put into it, and the ones you do put in are the ones heat closes back up.
Coverage follows the same logic. For a garage-kept car the front end is the priority, because rock strikes are overwhelmingly a forward-facing problem. That does not automatically mean full body. It does mean the conversation should include the panels above and beside you, not only the ones ahead.

Follow a gravel truck across the 520 deck or sit in a construction-narrowed lane on I-5 and the glass takes the hit the hood was spared. What paint protection film costs, plainly
Read those as averages rather than as a menu. Three things move the real figure: the square footage the panels actually take, how much relief work the curves and edges demand, and the state of the paint we find on the day. That last one is the one people forget, and it is the one that can add a stage to the job. What does not move the figure is where you live. A car that came down I-5 this morning is quoted off the same sheet as one from three blocks away.

What changes with the price is how much of the car ends up underneath it, never the quality of what goes down. Ceramic coatings are quoted per vehicle rather than listed, because prep is what drives that number and a coating locks in whatever is under it.
We recommend at least a full front end, and we say so before anyone asks. Partial front is a real package and we quote it without a sales pitch, because for some owners cost genuinely is the deciding factor. What we will not do is let you assume you can top it up later for the difference. Film cannot be extended at its edge. Going from partial to full means lifting what is already on the car and refilming those panels from bare paint, so the upgrade path costs more in total than starting at full front would have. Decide that once, now, rather than twice. The drive down, and what to read first

Does self-healing film really work, and how warm does it have to be?
It genuinely works, on fine marks. Is PPF or a ceramic coating the better choice for a Seattle car?

Will film protect my paint from tree sap and bird droppings?
It takes the hit instead of your paint, which is the point. That is not permission to leave them there. Anything acidic that bakes on a panel in the sun can mark the film, and the difference is that film is a replaceable layer and your factory paint is not. Can you protect the windshield too?
