HONEST COMPARISON

PPF vs ceramic coating, answered straight

Paint protection film physically stops rock chips. A ceramic coating, at a few microns thick, cannot and never will. Film costs more, averaging $1,400 for a partial front, $2,000 for a full front end and around $7,000 for a full vehicle. We install both, so here is the honest split.

8 mil of self-healing urethane, versus microns of coating

The decision in five quick answers

Does ceramic coating stop rock chips?

No. A coating is a few microns of hardened resin. Stopping a stone at highway speed takes the 8 mil of self-healing urethane that paint protection film is made of.

What does paint protection film cost?

About $1,400 for partial front coverage, $2,000 for a full front end and around $7,000 for a full vehicle. STEK film carries a 10-year manufacturer warranty and self-heals light swirls with heat.

What does a ceramic coating cost?

A fraction of comparable film coverage, quoted per vehicle on size and paint condition. Gtechniq Crystal Serum Ultra is rated for up to 9 years, which is why coatings win on cost per year of gloss.

Which one should I buy first?

Film, if what worries you is rock chips on I-5 and SR-167, because nothing else physically stops them. Coating, if what worries you is UV, bird droppings, brake dust and how long washing takes.

Can you do both on one car?

Yes, and it is the best value order of operations: paint correction first if the paint needs it, film on the impact zones, coating over the remaining paint, wheels and glass. One drop-off.

The longer answers, including whether a coating is worth it over film

What is the difference between PPF and ceramic coating?

PPF Ceramic Coating
What it actually is A physical sheet of 8 mil self-healing urethane laid over the paint A liquid resin that cures into a hard, glass-like layer bonded to the clear coat
Thickness 8 mil of STEK DYNOshield film A few microns, which is millionths of a meter
Stops rock chips Yes: the film physically absorbs impacts No: a coating is microns thick and cannot stop stones
Self-healing Yes: light swirls disappear with heat No, though the hard surface resists marring
Gloss & slickness Built-in hydrophobic top coat on STEK film Exceptional: deep gloss and extreme water beading
Chemical & UV defense Strong Strong: this is what coatings do best
Easier washing Yes Yes: dirt releases with far less effort
What it can cover Only the panels you pay to film, with hand-trimmed edges at the borders Every painted panel, and separately wheels, glass and interior
Hardness rating Not rated in H: urethane works by flexing and absorbing, not by being hard Gtechniq Crystal Serum Light is 9H, Crystal Serum Ultra is 10H
If it gets damaged The affected panel of film is removed and replaced. The paint underneath is untouched The coating is decontaminated and reapplied. Anything that reached the paint is a paint repair
Typical lifespan 10-year manufacturer warranty Multi-year, up to 9 years with Crystal Serum Ultra
Relative cost Higher: full front averages $2,000 Lower: a fraction of comparable film coverage

Short version: film is armor, a coating is a force field for everything except impacts, and the strongest builds in our shop wear both.

Why can PPF stop a rock chip when a ceramic coating cannot?

Because one of them is a sheet and the other is a skin, and the gap between them is not a matter of degree. Paint protection film is 8 mil of thermoplastic urethane, a physical layer thick enough to deform, absorb the energy of an impact and spread it out before it reaches your clear coat. A ceramic coating is a liquid resin that cures onto the clear coat and ends up a few microns thick, which is millionths of a meter. There is nothing there to absorb anything.

Hardness ratings confuse this, understandably. Gtechniq Crystal Serum Ultra is rated 10H and Crystal Serum Light 9H, and those are real numbers describing real scratch resistance. But hardness is resistance to being marred, not resistance to being hit. A pane of glass is harder than a phone case and you know which one you would rather drop your phone in. The coating wins against a gritty wash mitt, a fingernail at the door handle and the swirls a tunnel wash puts in. It has never had a mechanism for stopping a stone off the back of a gravel truck at 60 miles an hour, and no coating brand that is being straight with you claims otherwise.

The film's other trick runs the same way. STEK builds DYNOshield with a self-healing top coat, so light swirls and wash marks sit in an elastic layer that relaxes back into shape with heat from the sun or warm water. A coating is hard rather than elastic, so what it resists it resists permanently, and what gets through it stays. Two different strategies against two different problems.

How much does PPF cost compared to ceramic coating?

Film is the more expensive product, and it is not close. Below is what we publish for each. Ceramic coating rows say "quoted per vehicle" because that is genuinely how coatings are priced here: size and paint condition decide the work, and a corrected two-seater and a swirled SUV are different jobs even when the same bottle ends up on top.

Product Package Price What you get
Paint protection film Partial front end ~$1,400 Bumper, partial hood and fenders, mirrors
Paint protection film Full front end ~$2,000 Full hood, full fenders, bumper, mirrors
Paint protection film Full vehicle ~$7,000 Every painted panel on the car
Paint protection film Windshield, DYNOtop $400–$650 Rated by STEK at 2.6x the impact resistance of bare glass
Ceramic coating Crystal Serum Light Quoted per vehicle Single layer, 9H, five-year manufacturer guarantee
Ceramic coating Crystal Serum Ultra Quoted per vehicle Dual layer, 10H, up to a nine-year guarantee, accredited detailers only
Ceramic coating EXO v5 top coat Quoted per vehicle Hydrophobic outer layer that goes over either Crystal Serum tier

The useful way to read that table is per square foot of car rather than per line item. A coating covers every painted panel plus wheels and glass for a fraction of what filming a full vehicle costs, which is why the coating looks like the value buy right up until a stone hits your hood. Film buys you protection against exactly one category of damage that the coating cannot touch, at a price that reflects it. Detail on either side lives in the PPF cost guide and the ceramic coating cost guide.

Which one lasts longer, PPF or ceramic coating?

On the published paperwork, film. STEK warranties DYNOshield and DYNOmatte for 10 years against delamination, yellowing, bubbling and cracking. Gtechniq Crystal Serum Light carries a five-year manufacturer guarantee at 9H, and Crystal Serum Ultra is a dual layer at 10H guaranteed for up to nine years, released only to accredited detailers. EXO v5 is a hydrophobic top coat that layers over either one rather than replacing it.

Those numbers describe the durability of the products, not a prediction about your car, and the honest caveat cuts both ways. A coating that gets washed with a dish sponge in a driveway will not read like a nine-year product no matter what the bottle says, and film on a car that lives outside under a maple asks more of the top coat than film on a garage queen. What is genuinely different is the failure mode at the end. A coating that has stopped beading is renewed by decontaminating and reapplying. Film that has taken a decade of hits comes off, and the factory paint underneath comes out looking like the day it was covered, which is the part owners tend to underestimate until they sell the car.

Should you get both, and in what order?

For most cars that see real highway miles, both is the right answer, and the order matters more than people expect.

Paint correction first, if the paint needs it. Both products are permanent-ish layers going over your clear coat, and both lock in whatever is underneath. Swirls that go under a nine-year coating stay there for nine years. Marks that go under 8 mil of film are sealed in until the film comes off. Correcting after the fact means undoing work you already paid for.

Film on the impact zones. That is the front bumper, hood, fenders and mirrors at minimum, because that is where road debris lands. Add the windshield in DYNOtop if your commute sits behind gravel trucks. A full front end at around $2,000 covers the overwhelming majority of what actually chips.

Coating over everything else. Here is the part specific to STEK: DYNOshield already has a hydrophobic top coat built in, so unlike most films it does not need a coating over it to bead water. What the coating is really for in a combined build is the painted panels the film does not cover, plus the wheels and glass, so the whole car sheds water and releases dirt the same way instead of behaving like two different cars at the hose.

Done as one drop-off, that is one decontamination, one correction and one process rather than three visits and three prep bills. We quote it as a package for exactly that reason.

Which film and which coating does SeaWraps install?

On the film side, STEK. We are a STEK Certified Installer and we lay DYNOshield in gloss and DYNOmatte in satin, both 8 mils with self-healing top coats and 10-year manufacturer warranties, plus DYNOtop for glass. If you are weighing that choice against the other name people bring up, our STEK vs XPEL comparison puts both manufacturers' published specs side by side and explains why we landed where we did, including the rows where XPEL publishes more than STEK does.

On the coating side, Gtechniq. Crystal Serum Light is the foundation at 9H with a five-year guarantee, Crystal Serum Ultra is the flagship at 10H with up to nine years, and EXO v5 is the hydrophobic top coat that goes over either. Ultra is restricted to accredited Gtechniq detailers, which is why it is not something you will find on a shelf. The full ladder, including wheel, glass and interior coatings, is on the ceramic coating page.

Whichever way you go, the thing that decides how your car looks in five years is not the logo on the bottle or the roll. It is whether the paint was properly prepped, whether film edges were wrapped rather than cut on the panel, and whether the coating went down in a clean bay on genuinely decontaminated paint. Ask any shop about that before you ask them about brands.

PPF vs ceramic coating: the questions buyers actually ask

PPF or ceramic coating: which should I get?

Ask what you are protecting against. If it is rock chips on I-5 and SR-167, only paint protection film physically stops them, and no coating ever will. If it is UV, bird droppings, brake dust and wash-day effort, a ceramic coating handles that for far less money. Daily highway drivers usually start with film on the front end.

Is ceramic coating worth it if I already have PPF?

STEK film ships with a hydrophobic top coat built in, so unlike most films it does not need a coating to bead water. Where the combination shines is coating the painted panels the film does not cover, so the whole car washes and beads the same way. Many customers film the front and coat the rest.

What does each option cost?

Paint protection film at SeaWraps averages $1,400 for partial front coverage, $2,000 for a full front end and around $7,000 for a full vehicle. Ceramic coating packages cost a fraction of comparable film coverage and are quoted per vehicle based on size and paint condition. The PPF price guide has the film side in detail.

Does ceramic coating prevent rock chips?

No, and any shop that says otherwise is selling you something. A coating is a few microns of hardened resin: brilliant against chemicals, UV and wash marring, physically incapable of absorbing a stone strike at highway speed. Chip protection is what the 8-mil urethane film is for.

Can you do both in one visit?

Yes, and it is the best-value order of operations: paint correction first if the paint needs it, film on the impact zones, coating over the remaining paint, wheels and glass. One drop-off, one detail-obsessed process, quoted as a package.

How long does PPF last compared to ceramic coating?

The film carries the longer paper. STEK warranties DYNOshield and DYNOmatte for 10 years against delamination, yellowing, bubbling and cracking. On the coating side, Gtechniq Crystal Serum Light is a single layer at 9H with a five-year manufacturer guarantee, and Crystal Serum Ultra is a dual layer at 10H guaranteed for up to nine years. Read those numbers as durability of the product rather than a promise about your specific car, because how a car is washed and where it sleeps moves the real answer on either product more than the spec sheet does.

Do I need paint correction before film or coating?

Before a coating, usually yes. A coating is a hard layer that bonds to your clear coat and locks in whatever is underneath it, so swirls and etching that go under a nine-year product stay there for nine years. Film is more forgiving because it is replaceable, but the same logic applies: anything sitting in the paint is about to be sealed under 8 mil of urethane. We will tell you honestly whether your paint needs correcting or just decontaminating, and a car with genuinely good paint does not need us to invent work for it.
