Paint correction, and what it can and cannot fix

Machine polishing removes swirl marks, light scratches, water spot etching and oxidation by leveling the clear coat. It does not remove a scratch your fingernail catches on. Pick the defect you are looking at and get the verdict before you book anything.

Which defect are you actually looking at?

Nearly every paint complaint that comes through our door lands in one of five buckets, and the five behave completely differently under a polisher. Three of them come out and stay out. One improves as far as it improves and then stops. One cannot be polished out at all, and a shop that tells you otherwise is about to spend clear coat your car will never get back.

Pick a defect below and the panel shows you how it behaves, with a light source raking across the surface the way low sun or a shop light bar does. That moving light is the whole point. Swirl marks are invisible on a dark car in a garage and unmissable in a parking lot at four in the afternoon, which is why so many owners discover them the week after they buy the car and assume something went wrong at the dealership.

Correction removes it

The defect paint correction exists for, and the one it handles most completely.

Swirls are thousands of shallow arc-shaped scratches sitting in the top of the clear coat, and almost every one of them came from washing: a gritty mitt, an automatic brush, a towel dragged across a panel that was not fully rinsed. Each groove scatters light in every direction instead of bouncing it back at you, which is why the paint looks perfect in a garage and looks like a spider web the second the sun or a shop light rakes across it at a low angle. They are shallow, they sit in a layer with material to spare, and leveling the clear coat around them takes them out completely.

Same mechanism as swirls with more force behind it, so depth becomes the whole question.

A bag dragged across the trunk lid, a jacket zipper down a door, a branch on a narrow driveway. These are longer, straighter and deeper than swirl marks, and where they stop decides everything. If the groove ended inside the clear coat, polishing levels the clear around it and the scratch is gone for good. If it carried on through the clear into the color underneath, nothing a polisher does will bring it back, because the material that would have to be removed is not there to remove. Most of what owners call a scratch turns out to be the first kind. Check before you assume either way.

Improves, often removes

Two completely different problems wear the same name, and only one of them is a polishing job.

A fresh water spot is dried mineral sitting on top of the clear coat, and it comes off during the wash and decontamination stage before a polisher is switched on. Etching is what that deposit becomes after it has sat through enough heat cycles to eat a shallow dish into the clear coat itself. At that point it is not a deposit any more, it is a shape in the surface, and the only way to remove a shape is to bring the clear coat down level with the bottom of it. Shallow etch rings come out clean. Deep ones get reduced to the point where you have to hunt for them, and that is the honest ceiling rather than a sales position. Cars parked outside through a Puget Sound winter collect this reliably.

Oxidation and dullness

Correction removes it

The gloss is almost never gone. It is buried under a thin failed layer.

Oxidation is UV damage to the outermost skin of the clear coat. It goes chalky and slightly rough, reflections stop being reflections and turn into a soft glow, and color goes flat. Reds and blacks show it first and worst. Owners usually read it as the paint simply being old and finished, and usually it is not: the failed layer is thin and sound clear coat is sitting directly beneath it. Polishing cuts through the dead layer, and the color that appears behind it is the color the car left the factory wearing. The one thing to watch for is clear coat failure, where the clear has started lifting and flaking in patches instead of dulling evenly. That is a paint problem, not a polishing problem, and no correction fixes it.

Cannot be polished out

The honest limit of the entire process, and the line we will not pretend does not exist.

If you drag a fingernail lightly across a scratch and it catches, the groove has gone through the clear coat. Polishing works by removing clear coat until the surface is level with the bottom of the defect, so taking this one out means removing clear coat all the way down to that depth across the entire panel, and there is not enough of it to give. A shop that promises to polish out a scratch your nail catches on is either not going to manage it or is going to take off more than your car can afford to lose. What correction can honestly do is round the edges so the scratch stops catching light as hard and stops being the first thing your eye lands on. Past that it becomes body shop work: fill, respray, blend. We will tell you which side of that line your scratch sits on when we look at it, and we would rather tell you before you pay us than after.

The panel above is drawn rather than photographed, on purpose. A swirl mark is a groove far too fine to survive being compressed into a web image, which is the practical reason nobody can show you a convincing photograph of one on a phone screen. What is accurate is the behavior: the way each defect appears and vanishes as light moves across it is exactly what you will see standing next to your own car in the sun.

What paint correction actually is

Your car's finish is layered: primer, then the color coat, then the clear coat over the top of both. The clear is the transparent layer that carries all the gloss and takes all the abuse, and almost every defect an owner can see lives inside it without ever reaching the color underneath.

Paint correction is machine polishing that removes a controlled amount of that clear coat. An abrasive compound and a pad on a machine cut the surface down until it sits level with the bottom of the scratches, so there is no longer a groove to scatter light. The reflection goes back to being a reflection instead of a glow. Nothing is added, nothing is coated and nothing is hidden. The defect is not covered up, it is gone, because the material that surrounded it has been taken away.

That is what separates correction from the glazes and filler polishes sold in bottles. Those pack a filler into the groove so it stops scattering light, and they are genuinely convincing for a few washes. Then the filler leaves and the swirls come back exactly as they were, which is why a car can look transformed on a dealer lot and tired again a month later.

The trade is that clear coat is finite. Your car was built with a fixed amount and every correction spends a share of it, so a good result is not the maximum possible correction. It is the most defect removal for the least material spent. Correction also protects nothing on its own: freshly polished paint is beautiful and completely exposed, which is why this work almost always finishes with something laid over the top.

Why correction comes before film or coating, never after

Paint protection film and ceramic coating do very different jobs, and they do the identical thing to the paint below them: they seal it in the condition it is in, at full gloss, for years.

Paint protection film is the more literal case. The film is also glossier than most factory paint, which tends to make existing swirl marks easier to see rather than harder. The self-healing top coat gets misunderstood here: heat closes light marring in the film's own surface, and does nothing at all for marring already sitting in the paint beneath it.

A ceramic coating reaches the same conclusion from a chemical direction. So the order is not a preference or an upsell, it is the only sequence that works. On our film and coating jobs the car gets a full wash, a clay bar, iron decontamination and a prep wipe, and correction goes in ahead of that where the paint needs it. The other way around means paying to strip film or polish off a coating, correcting, then buying the protection twice.

Vinyl is the one real exception. An opaque color change wrap hides what is underneath it completely, so correction is not part of that job the way it is with clear film. What matters for a wrap is that the paint is sound and clean enough for the adhesive to hold, not that it is flawless.

Single stage, multi stage, and why we will not put a number on it first

A stage is one pass over the paint with one combination of abrasive and pad. That is the whole definition, and everything people argue about downstream follows from it.

A single stage is one pass that both cuts and finishes. It suits paint that is fundamentally healthy: light haze, wash marring, a car that has been looked after and simply lost its edge. The compound is aggressive enough to level what is there and fine enough to leave a finish worth coating.

Multi stage exists because of a problem the first pass creates. Any abrasive coarse enough to remove real defects leaves its own marks behind, finer than the ones it took out but still there. So a cutting pass removes the damage and one or more refining passes remove what the cutting pass left, each with a finer abrasive than the last.

You will not find a stage count or an hour figure anywhere on this page, and that is deliberate rather than evasive. How many passes a car needs depends on how hard the paint is, how deep the defects run and how much clear coat is there to work with, and none of those three can be read off a phone call or a photograph. We set the scope after looking at the panels under lighting, and we tell you where we plan to stop and why. The target is never perfection at any cost, because chasing the last defect on a panel is where shops take off clear coat that should have been left alone.

How to tell whether your paint needs correcting

Three tests, all free, all doable in your own driveway before you speak to anybody. Do them on a clean, dry car, because dirt hides everything the first test is trying to show you.

TEST 01

The light test

Get one strong light source at a low angle onto a dark panel: direct sun, a shop light, or a phone torch held close and moved slowly. Overcast daylight is the enemy here, because soft light from everywhere at once hides swirls completely. If a fine web of arcs appears and then disappears as the light moves, that is swirl marking, and it is correctable.

The fingernail test

Find the worst individual scratch and drag a fingernail lightly across it, perpendicular to its length. If your nail catches, the groove has gone through the clear coat and polishing will not remove it. If your nail glides over, the scratch stopped inside the clear and is a candidate. One second per scratch, and it settles the question that costs the most to get wrong.

TEST 03

The reflection test

Find something with a straight edge reflected in a panel: a light bar, a door frame, a roofline. Look at the edge of that reflection, not the panel. Healthy clear coat gives you a sharp line. A soft, glowing, slightly fuzzy edge means the surface is scattering light before it gets back to you, and that is haze or oxidation rather than individual scratches.

Plenty of cars pass all three. A garage-kept vehicle a year or two old that has only ever been hand washed often has paint sitting exactly where a coating wants it, and we would rather say so at the walk-around than sell you a polish you do not need. At the other end, clear coat lifting and flaking in patches rather than dulling evenly is failure rather than damage, and no correction brings it back.

What paint correction costs here

Every correction is quoted per vehicle, and there is no price list on this page for the same reason there is no stage count. The work is set by the condition of your paint, not by which category your car falls into. A one-owner sedan that has only ever been hand washed and a black truck that has been through an automatic brush wash every week for four years are not the same job, and pricing them the same would mean overcharging one to subsidize the other.

Correction is quoted standalone or bundled with a coating or a film install. Most of ours are bundled, partly because that is the order the work runs in anyway, and partly because you only pay once for the wash, the decontamination and the setup instead of twice across two visits.

Ceramic coating pricing works the same way and for the same reason. Film is far more predictable, because coverage is defined by panels rather than by condition, so PPF costs average around $1,400 for a partial front, $2,000 for a full front end and $7,000 for full body. Correction, where your paint needs it, is quoted on top of those rather than hidden inside them.

Will paint correction remove scratches from my car?

Some of them, and there is a free test that tells you which. Drag a fingernail lightly across the scratch. If your nail glides over it, the groove stopped inside the clear coat and machine polishing can level the surface down to it and remove it completely. If your nail catches, the scratch has gone through the clear coat, and no polisher removes it, because removing it would mean taking clear coat off the whole panel down to that depth and there is not enough there to give. Correction can still soften the edges so it stops grabbing the light, but a scratch your nail catches on is body shop work. Swirl marks, the fine web you see on a dark car in direct sun, always pass that test and always come out.

Can scratches be removed before PPF is installed?

Yes, and it is the only sensible time to do it. Paint protection film is optically clear, so whatever is in the paint when the film goes down stays visible through it, and the film is glossier than your paint, which tends to make defects easier to see rather than harder. Anything that can be polished out should be polished out while the paint is still exposed. The alternative is paying to strip the film, correct the paint and install fresh film later, which costs several times what doing it in the right order costs. Do I need paint correction before a ceramic coating?

If your paint has defects in it, yes. A ceramic coating bonds to the clear coat and stays there for years, so it seals in the exact condition of the surface underneath it. How many stages of paint correction does my car need?

We set that after we look at the paint, not before, and any shop quoting a stage count over the phone is guessing. A stage is one pass over the paint with one combination of abrasive and pad. A single pass that both cuts and finishes suits paint that is basically healthy with light haze in it. Harder cases need a cutting pass to remove the defects followed by refining passes to remove the marks the cutting pass leaves behind, because every abrasive leaves its own signature and finer ones erase coarser ones. How many passes yours needs depends on how hard the paint is, how deep the defects run and how much clear coat is there to work with, and none of those are knowable until the car is in front of us.

Does paint correction damage the clear coat?

It consumes a little of it, on purpose, and that is worth understanding before you book.
